Egypt Gives ENGIE Tough Conditions to Ramp up Red Sea Wind Farm Capacity to 650MW

By: Energy capital & power

French renewable energy developer ENGIE has announced it will increase the capacity of the Red Sea Wind Energy project, currently under construction in Ras Ghareb, Egypt, to 650MW.

Total planned capacity for the plant is currently 500MW, so the expansion is by 150 MW or 30%.

“Ahead of schedule and budget (with 306 MW already connected to the grid), RSWE was awarded a 150 MW extension by the Egyptian government, but on condition to build the 20 new turbines within the planned timeframe for the initial 500 MW (March 2023 – August 2025)”,

ENGIE is developing the plant with Orascom Construction, the Egyptian EPC firm (25%), Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Toyota’s international trading arm (20%) and Eurus Energy, the Japanese wind and solar operator (20%).

To monetize the expansion, the group has secured an additional long-term power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The transaction calls for 25 years of supply of 650 MW of wind generated electricity.

Red Sea Wind Energy is the consortium’s second project in Ras Ghareb. It follows a 262.5-MW wind farm that went into operation in October 2019.

The Egyptian government aims to projects production of 42% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.3Million tonnes per year.
